SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL

Family Safari Holidays in Africa

It may seem like an unusual development, but there are more and more safari holidays that are suitable for families with children. Safari holidays are so rewarding for the whole family, it seems a shame not to take advantage of the opportunity to take your children with you. There are however, a number of things to bear in mind.

South Africa
South Africa is a one of the most popular destinations for family-friendly safari holidays. In recent years the infrastructure has been developed significantly to make the country's safaris more attractive to families. The quality of the roads is of a particularly high standard, meaning that it is possible for families to rent their own car and enjoy their safari at leisure. With young children it is important to be able to stop on occasion, or cut the trip short if they tire themselves out.
Safari holidays in South Africa also benefit from the number of private safari parks and game reserves in the country. These are usually very manageable in size, meaning a good amount of animals per hour - a very important consideration when dealing with younger children who may have shorter attention spans.

Botswana & Namibia
To the North of South Africa, there are plenty of great options for safari holidays in Botswana and Namibia, though they might be more suited to slightly older children. In Botswana some of the safaris involve canoe rides and other forms of transport that are probably unsuitable for younger children.
Namibia also has many things to recommend it as a destination for family safari holidays: the roads are good and there is a great variety of landscapes. However, many safaris in Namibia will involve long drives which may test the patience of younger children.

Kenya and Tanzania
There are also lots of great destinations for safari holidays on the east coast of Africa. The proximity of Mombasa to the local safari areas makes it a particularly attractive option - greatly increasing the range of accommodation options.
Trips to Tanzania can be organised to take in both the Serengeti - the home of one of the greatest sights in the world, the Great Migration, and the beautiful sweeping beaches of Zanzibar. Despite a less-developed infrastructure, Tanzania offers many other natural wonders, including the vast Ngorongoro Crater, and Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Some things to bear in mind
It is important to keep in mind the fact that there are age restrictions for some activities on safari holidays, so it is imperative to check beforehand to avoid inconvenience and disappointment.
